April 6th

Literacy:

Your child's first learning task is due Wednesday, April 8th!
Please make a sign/poster to share a message of gratitude for health care workers and/or essential service workers. You may choose to hang this in your window or find another space to display it. The purpose of this learning task is to share our thanks and show our appreciation for those who are keeping our community safe and healthy! Please e-mail me a picture (kelly.watson@sd78.bc.ca) of your finished sign/poster! I have made one to display in my window too!

Task:
1. With parent support, brainstorm who is working in our community right now and what jobs are considered essential services.
2. Write a list of these jobs on a piece of paper (your parents may help you with the spelling of the jobs).
3. Use any supplies you may have at home (paper, crayons, pencils, paint, glue, etc) to create a sign/poster.
4. Write words of gratitude/appreciation/thanks directed at health care workers and/or essential service workers! Your child may chose to thank all health care workers/essential services workers or they may chose to create a poster specifically showing support for a particular occupation that they feel connected to (ex. We support and love nurses!; Thank-you essential service workers!; I am grateful for police, fire and ambulance keeping our community safe!)
5. Remind children to make their writing big and bold if their plan is for people to be able to see it from a window."

RAZ Kids:

Your children have been using RAZ Kids (https://www.raz-kids.com) as part of our reading group rotations since September. Students have their own log in and passwords that they know.

1)

2)

3)

4)

Once students have logged in, they can enter the Reading Room to read books at their level. They first listen to the story being read aloud, then read the book aloud themselves. Once they do this, they earn points to create their avatar.

Each day, I ask that you help your child choose one book from "My Assignments." Students once again listen to the story read aloud to them, read it aloud themselves, and then there will be some comprehension questions to complete about the story they just read. They have not done the question part before, so please chat with them about the story and help them through these questions while they get the hang of it.

Numeracy:

We are going to start slow with all subjects as we get back into the swing of things.

Your task for today is to create 10 equations that equal 10. You may use addition or subtraction (ex.
8+2=10).
For a challenge, create 10 equations that equal 30 and then write a real life story with one of your equations. For example, 50-20 = 30. I made 50 cupcakes for my class, but there were only 20 students in my class, so I had 30 leftover.

Take a picture of your questions and email them to kelly.watson@sd78.bc.ca

Science:

I hope you are managing to get outside responsibly with your family during this break. This nature activity book (also found in the educational links tab on the left side of the blog) is a great activity to do form the comfort of your home, or from your backyard.
